Checking Criminal History in Rusk County
Begin with the record closest to the event. A filed felony or misdemeanor belongs in Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, commonly called WCCA. Set the county filter to Rusk and compare the case number, filing year, charge rows, status, and public party details. The dated Rusk County Jail PDF answers a narrower question about current listed custody. An incident or arrest narrative comes from the arresting agency. Wisconsin Department of Justice records returned through WORCS form a separate statewide history based largely on fingerprint-supported reporting.
Good search notes prevent a weak match from turning into a wrong claim. Record the portal, date, spelling used, county filter, and case or order reference. Use a known case number when possible. Names, aliases, and dates help narrow a statewide check, but fingerprints offer stronger identity support for a dispute about one's own state record.
- Search WCCA and restrict the county field to Rusk for filed state criminal cases.
- Check the latest jail PDF when the question is current Rusk County custody.
- Ask Rusk County Sheriff or Ladysmith Police for the underlying agency report.
- Order the complaint, judgment, or certified copy from the Circuit Court clerk.
- Use WORCS for a Wisconsin CIB history, then challenge an actual error through DOJ.
Rusk County Records Split Four Ways
One Rusk County arrest can create four records on four clocks. The agency report describes the event and the first allegations. Jail staff create a booking and custody entry. The district attorney may file different charges, which creates a Circuit Court case and docket. Fingerprints, dispositions, and corrections events can later join the CIB history. None of these sources replaces the others.
| Rusk County source | Best use | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sheriff or LPD report | Incident and arrest facts | May be redacted or withheld by law |
| Jail inmate PDF | Current listed custody and bond | Not a historical arrest index |
| WCCA and Clerk file | Filed charges, events, and outcome | Portal does not provide filed documents |
| WORCS CIB result | Statewide fingerprint-linked history | Name matches and reporting gaps require care |
The practical rule is simple. Read the source date and custodian before reading the allegation. A later court disposition is more useful for outcome than an early booking line. The Rusk County criminal court docket and Clerk copies work together when the online summary is not enough.
Wisconsin Official Background Checks
The Wisconsin Online Record Check System is the state's public name-check channel. Any person may order an adult Wisconsin history. The base non-fingerprint check costs $7, and a requested paper result adds $5. WORCS can contain arrests, prosecution entries, findings, sentences, and DOC admission or release data. It is not limited to convictions. A local Sheriff record check costs $20 per subject with an identification card, but that local product is not the same as a statewide CIB history.
A fingerprint-supported check is stronger when identity is the key issue. Wisconsin DOJ does not name one ordinary-public commercial capture vendor for Rusk County, so confirm fingerprint-card capture with CIB or local law enforcement before traveling. The FBI also offers an Identity History Summary for the subject's own review. It costs $18 and requires fingerprints through its electronic or mail process.
| Official product | Fee | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| WORCS name check | $7 | Wisconsin CIB history |
| WORCS paper result | $5 extra | Paper delivery surcharge |
| Rusk Sheriff check | $20 per subject | Local agency record check with ID card |
| FBI self-history | $18 | Federal fingerprint-based subject review |
Rusk County WORCS and WCCA Searches
WORCS and WCCA answer different questions. WCCA reports public court case data entered by Wisconsin circuit courts. WORCS returns the central criminal history maintained by the Wisconsin DOJ Crime Information Bureau. A case can appear in WCCA while a CIB disposition remains incomplete or unmatched. A CIB arrest cycle can also exist before a court case is filed. Search both only when the question truly needs both scopes.
The DOJ record-reading page shows how to interpret a state result. Its official screen also documents why an arrest entry and a final outcome must be read apart.
The guide helps a Rusk County reader trace an arrest cycle through later prosecution and disposition fields instead of treating the first line as the end of the matter.
Criminal Record Types
Rusk County records follow their creators. Sheriff and Ladysmith Police reports capture allegations, response, evidence, and arrest facts. The jail list captures current booking and custody details. The Clerk keeps complaints, motions, judgments, and other court documents. DOJ builds the statewide CIB history, while Wisconsin DOC maintains prison and community-supervision status. The sex offender registry is another DOC system with its own publication rules.
- Complaint
- The sworn paper that begins a filed criminal case and states the allegations.
- Disposition
- The outcome of a charge or case, such as conviction, dismissal, or acquittal.
- Signature bond
- Release based on a promise and court conditions rather than deposited cash.
- Extended supervision
- The community portion of a Wisconsin truth-in-sentencing term after confinement.
- Expungement
- Narrow relief under section 973.015 that must be ordered at the original sentencing.
A Ladysmith ordinance citation belongs to Municipal Court and is a civil forfeiture matter, not a state criminal misdemeanor. Federal prosecutions use PACER, not WCCA. Those boundary lines matter because a no-result search in one system says nothing certain about a record kept elsewhere.
Rusk County Jail PDF Limits
The Rusk County jail page posts dated inmate-list PDFs, not a searchable historical database. The inspected format showed a booking image, name, internal number, age, booking date and type, offense lines, a sometimes blank class field, bond, and masked scheduled-release data. It did not show many fields that other rosters may publish, including arresting agency, booking time, court date, warrant number, or a firm release date.
Absence from today's file does not prove that no arrest occurred. A person may have been released, cited, transferred, or never booked into the county jail. Call the jail when custody status is urgent. Use the agency report for the event and WCCA after a charge is filed. The Rusk County arrest lookup process covers every documented local channel without turning the PDF into an arrest gallery.
Historical figures need labels too. The Sheriff reported 426 bookings and an average daily population of 29 for 2020, but those are not current totals. A 2024 DOC inspection listed capacity at 52 and the inspection-day population at 21. Those figures describe different dates and should not be combined into a present crime claim.
Inside a Rusk County Criminal Record
Field meaning changes with the system. A CIB history may list names and aliases, demographic identifiers, arrest dates and agencies, arrest charges, prosecution action, findings, sentence, and DOC admission or release. WCCA instead centers on a case number, filing date, status, parties, counsel, charge statutes, hearings, court events, judgment, sentence, and financial obligations. The Rusk County roster has a much smaller custody field set.
| Name and identifiers | Aliases and state or federal identifiers may appear in CIB; WCCA limits protected personal data. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Agency, date, initial allegations, booking type, and bond depend on the source record. |
| Charges and statutes | WCCA separates count, description, Wisconsin statute, class, plea, and disposition. |
| Case events | Filings, hearings, orders, pleas, judgment, sentence, and review appear as dated docket entries. |
| Custody and supervision | County jail, state prison, probation, parole, and extended supervision live in separate systems. |
| Restrictions | Juvenile data, victim details, account numbers, and records protected by law may be absent or redacted. |
Rusk County Warrant Search Chain
Rusk County publishes no complete public active-warrant list. The jail PDF is not one. WCCA can show a bench-warrant event after it is entered in a public case, but it does not guarantee a live list of all warrants. Start with the Sheriff at 715-532-2189 or the records email for routing. Use the Circuit Court Clerk at 715-532-2108 and the WCCA docket for a filed state case. Ladysmith citation matters may require Police or Municipal Court instead.
A bench warrant often follows a missed hearing or failure to comply. An arrest warrant begins an apprehension process. A search warrant authorizes a search and may remain confidential until execution. The Sheriff's posted $100 warrant-service line belongs to civil process and is not a fee that clears a criminal warrant.
Note: Confirm current warrant status with the issuing court or agency before taking action on an old docket entry.
Public Access Laws in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Public Records Law presumes access but does not make every part of every file public. Send a request to the actual custodian. Rusk County Sheriff handles its own incident records, Ladysmith Police handles city police files, and the Circuit Court Clerk handles filed court documents. Wisconsin requires a response as soon as practicable and without delay. It does not promise a fixed ten-day deadline.
Key Wisconsin laws:
Wis. Stat. § 19.35 grants inspection and copy rights subject to statutes, balancing, and redaction.
Wis. Stat. § 165.82 sets DOJ criminal-history check fees.
Wis. Stat. § 165.83 governs central criminal-history collection and reporting.
Wis. Stat. § 165.84 addresses qualifying fingerprint and record submissions.
Wis. Stat. § 801.19 protects personal identifiers in circuit filings.
Ask for the segregable public part if some material is restricted. A custodian may charge location costs only when that cost reaches $50, may seek prepayment when total costs exceed $5, and may not charge for redaction time. Sheriff copy and media fees follow the separate 2026 county schedule.
Rusk County Miner Avenue Custodians
Several justice offices share one short stretch of Ladysmith, but their files do not. The Rusk County Government Center at 311 Miner Avenue East holds the Sheriff in Suite L100, the District Attorney in Suite L327, and the Circuit Court Clerk in Suite L350. Ladysmith Police also uses an East Miner Avenue address. Municipal Court is at 120 West Miner. A request sent to the wrong suite can still miss the legal custodian.
The official county home page shows the Government Center identity and location used by these Rusk County offices.
The shared building makes an in-person visit compact, yet a Sheriff report, Clerk case file, and DA prosecution file remain distinct records with different access rules.

Sealed, Expunged, and Restricted Records
Wisconsin expungement under section 973.015 is narrow. The judge must order it at the original sentencing. The person generally must have been under 25 when the offense occurred, and the maximum term must be six years or less. Other exclusions still apply. Successful completion requires no later conviction, no probation revocation, and completion of every probation condition. The discharge certificate then goes to the court.
Relief does not work like a broad clean-slate system. It does not automatically destroy related police or prosecutor files. A person reviewing a Rusk County matter should obtain the judgment or minutes from the Clerk, confirm whether expungement was ordered, and later confirm that the court received the discharge certificate. A separate DOJ challenge form addresses an actual CIB error. Juvenile files, protected identifiers, victim information, and records restricted by another law follow different rules.
Rusk County Supervision Records
Probation is not run by a Rusk County department. Wisconsin DOC Division of Community Corrections serves the county through Region 5, Unit 513, at N5273 State Road 27 North, Business Center Suite 2 in Ladysmith. Its number is 715-532-6398. DOC supervises probation, parole, and extended supervision, while the Wisconsin Parole Commission decides discretionary release for eligible older-law sentences.
Use DOC Person in Our Care or Client Search for public custody or client status, then compare WCCA's judgment and sentence. Court data shows what the judge imposed. DOC data reflects present supervision. Unit 513 can route a question but may not disclose confidential case details. A violation can lead to sanctions or administrative revocation without creating a new criminal charge, so a court-only search can miss the current supervision context.
Note: DOC NOTIS serves eligible enrolled victims, survivors, and witnesses; it is not a general Rusk County alert list.
Rusk County Federal Record Layer
Federal cases from Rusk County fall within the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. They do not appear in WCCA. PACER supplies federal dockets and filed documents after registration. Through the end of 2026, its current fee is $0.10 per page with a $3 document cap, and quarterly charges of $30 or less are waived. Opinions and courthouse terminal use are free.
The official PACER page is the federal court-record starting point for Rusk County.
PACER covers the federal docket and documents, while a federal custody question belongs in the Bureau of Prisons locator.
The BOP inmate locator offers name and number searches for records from 1982 forward.
A result marked released or not in BOP custody does not rule out Wisconsin prison, Rusk County Jail, or community supervision.
Rusk County Criminal Records by City
Ladysmith is Rusk County's only incorporated city and the only municipality with its own police department. It therefore gets the county's sole city guide. Police reports start with LPD, municipal ordinance citations go to Ladysmith Municipal Court, and a state criminal filing moves to the Rusk Circuit Court. The county's eight villages remain within the Sheriff's routine jurisdiction and are not padded into city pages.
Ladysmith Criminal Records
Population 3,216 in the 2020 Census. LPD and Municipal Court keep distinct city records.
